Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez were the best agents in their respective agencies, were assigned to kill each other, got married instead, and retired to raise children. Nine years later other agents are disappearing and they are called back for one mission. They are captured within the day. Carmen and Juni, who thought their parents were consultants, are told the truth by Uncle Felix and sent to the safe house. Spy Kids was made for 35 million dollars, grossed 147 million, and Robert Rodriguez wrote, directed, shot, edited and scored it.
What Happens On Floop’s Island
Fegan Floop, played by Alan Cumming, hosts a children’s TV show with creatures called Fooglies who are actually captured agents, mutated. His assistant Minion is the real villain, building an army of robot children. Carmen and Juni take a submarine, a jet pack and the thumb-thumbs, and get to the island castle. The family is reunited in the last act, and Floop turns out not to be the bad guy. Machete, the uncle who sells spy gadgets, is Danny Trejo.
Why It Became A Franchise
Rodriguez built it from a story he made up for his kids and shot it in Austin at his own studio. The gadgets, the Thumb-Thumbs, the virtual room, and Floop’s castle were all designed to be toys. Three sequels followed, then a 2023 reboot. Banderas and Gugino are the best spy-parent pair in a kids’ film.
