Anita Panchouri is about to marry a wealthy Londoner to save her father’s failing business in Trinidad. The night before the engagement party, a soca singer named Lee de Leon plays at the house, and the arrangement starts to come apart. Bazodee is the first feature film built around Machel Montano, the biggest soca artist in the Caribbean, and it is shot entirely in Trinidad during Carnival season.
The Story Of Anita And Lee
“Bazodee” is Trinidadian slang for being dazed by love, and that is the plot. Anita’s father Ram, played by Bollywood veteran Kabir Bedi, has borrowed from the fiance’s family and cannot afford for the wedding to fall through. Lee has his own history, a career that stalled after a bad contract and a reputation for not finishing what he starts. The film moves between Hindu wedding rituals, a Carnival fete and the beaches of the north coast, and the ending is decided at a soca show rather than at an altar.
Why It Is Worth Watching
This is a Bollywood-style musical made in the Caribbean, with the songs performed on screen rather than dubbed over. Montano wrote the soundtrack and songs like Memories and Like Ah Boss are performed in full. It is a light film, and it is meant to be. If you want to see Trinidad at Carnival time without a documentary, this is the easiest way in.
