A metro train in Mumbai is hijacked. The hijacker, bald, bandaged and singing Bekhayali, wants 40,000 crore in farmers’ loans written off and he wants it in an hour. The negotiator is Narmada, played by Nayanthara. The hijacker is Azad, a jailer at a women’s prison, and the six women with him are his prisoners. And there is another man with the same face. Jawan was the biggest Hindi film of 2023 and Shah Rukh Khan’s second thousand-crore film of that year.
What Happens With The Two Faces
Azad’s father was Vikram Rathore, a soldier framed for a massacre by Kalee Gaikwad, an arms dealer played by Vijay Sethupathi, and presumed dead. He is not. The flashback to Rathore’s unit, the baby born in prison, and Deepika Padukone as Aishwarya, the mother, is the heart of the film. The present-day plot is a series of hijackings that expose a hospital scandal, a factory gas leak and a rigged election, with Azad’s women each getting her own reason.
Why It Was A Different Shah Rukh Film
Atlee, a Tamil director, shot it like a Tamil mass film, with slow-motion entries, a bald SRK with a cigar and a monologue to camera about voting that was the most talked-about scene of the year. Anirudh’s Zinda Banda and Chaleya are the songs. Sanjay Dutt has a cameo. It came out nine months after Pathaan.
