Mystery Thriller

Cliff and Cydney are on honeymoon in Hawaii, hiking the eleven-mile Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali coast. On the trail they meet Nick, an ex-special forces type with stories that do not add up, and his girlfriend Gina. News comes through that a couple has been murdered on Oahu and the killers are a man and a woman. A Perfect Getaway is a twist film, and the twist is good enough that the trailer gave away nothing.

What Happens On The Trail

There is a third couple too, Kale and Cleo, drifters who hitched a ride with Cliff and Cydney on day one and are now somewhere behind them on the trail. Everyone suspects everyone. Nick, played by Timothy Olyphant, likes to talk about screenplays and “red snappers”, his term for a misleading clue, and Cliff is a screenwriter, so the film keeps winking at its own structure. Then, about an hour in, the film stops and replays what you have seen from a different angle.

Why It Works

David Twohy, who made Pitch Black, shot it on the real trail in Kauai and in Puerto Rico, and the locations are spectacular. Steve Zahn and Milla Jovovich play against type, and Chris Hemsworth, two years before Thor, is Kale. The director’s cut adds ten minutes and is the better version.
