Jay is nineteen, in Detroit, and has just slept with Hugh for the first time. He chloroforms her, ties her to a wheelchair in an abandoned building, and explains: something is going to follow her now. It walks. It never runs. It can look like anyone. If it catches her it kills her, and then it comes back for him. The only way to get rid of it is to pass it on. It Follows is a horror film built on one rule, and it never cheats the rule.
What Happens After Hugh
Jay sees it first as an old woman in a hospital gown walking across the school field. Then as a tall man in her doorway. Her sister, her friends Yara and Paul, and the neighbour Greg try to help without quite believing. They drive to a lake house, then to a pool, where they set a trap with electrical equipment and the thing, invisible to everyone but Jay, walks into the water. The ending is two people walking down a street with someone behind them, and the film refuses to say.
Why It Became The Horror Film Of Its Year
David Robert Mitchell shot it in suburban Detroit with wide shots that make you scan every background for a walking figure. Disasterpeace’s synth score is on a lot of playlists. Maika Monroe became a horror lead from it. The time period is deliberately unclear: old cars, no phones, a clamshell e-reader. It premiered at Cannes.
