Larry Clark made Kids in 1995 and has basically been making the same film ever since. The Smell of Us moves it to Paris. A group of skateboarders hang around the Trocadero, film each other on phones, and a few of them make money by meeting older men and women found through a website. This is an adults-only film, and it is Clark at his most unfiltered.
What The Film Is About
Math is the quiet centre of the group, Pacman is the one who treats it as a job, JP is the one falling apart. There is no plot in the usual sense. Scenes run on until they end, the camera is handheld and often held by the kids themselves, and the adults who appear, including Clark playing a homeless man called Rockstar, are either predators or absent. The French setting changes the texture: these are middle-class kids with phones and Vans rather than the New York drifters of Clark’s earlier work.
What To Know Before Watching
The shoot was difficult, the original screenwriter walked off, and the French release in 2015 was limited. Critics were split hard. Some called it his most honest film about how youth gets bought and sold, others thought it was simply ugly. It is in French with subtitles and contains explicit content throughout.
