Quentin Jacobsen has loved Margo, the girl next door, since they were nine and found a dead man in a park together. They have not really spoken in years. Then one night she climbs through his window in black paint and takes him on an eleven-stop revenge campaign against the friends and boyfriend who betrayed her. The next morning she is gone. Paper Towns is the second John Green adaptation, and it is less about getting the girl than about finding out she was never who you thought.
What Happens After Margo Disappears
She has left clues: a Woody Guthrie poster, a highlighted Walt Whitman, an address in an abandoned mall. Quentin and his friends Ben and Radar work out that she has gone to Agloe, New York, a “paper town” that map makers invented to catch copyright thieves. They skip graduation and drive there in a minivan with Lacey and Radar’s girlfriend Angela, with 21 hours to make it back for prom. The road trip is the best part of the film. What they find in Agloe is the point of it.
Why It Is Different From The Fault In Our Stars
Nat Wolff, who was Isaac in the earlier film, is the lead here. Cara Delevingne’s Margo is barely in the film after the first act, which is what the story needs. Ben’s Pokemon song and the cow on the highway are the moments. The ending refuses the romance the poster promises.
