The Kims fold pizza boxes in a half-basement flat in Seoul and steal wifi from the cafe upstairs. The son Ki-woo gets a tutoring job with the rich Park family through a friend’s forged diploma. Then his sister becomes the art therapist. Then the father becomes the driver. Then the mother becomes the housekeeper. The Parks never find out they are related. Parasite was the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture, and it also won Director, Original Screenplay and International Film.
What Happens In The Park House
The Parks go camping and the Kims take over the house for a night. The doorbell rings. The old housekeeper, who they got fired, has come back for something in the basement, and the film changes shape at that exact moment. The second half is the flood, the birthday party, and the ending that Bong Joon-ho has said is the point of the film: the son’s plan to buy the house, which is a fantasy, and the father in the basement, which is not.
Why It Hit Everywhere
The Park house was built from scratch on a set, with the stairs and levels designed so that every shot shows who is above whom. Song Kang-ho as the father has one look at the party that explains the whole film. The “ram-don” scene, the peach fuzz and the Morse code are all quoted. It made 258 million dollars worldwide.
