Deepak Singh sells his shop in Rajasthan, takes his wife Rakhi and their small daughter to Mumbai, and loses the deposit on a flat to a con man before the first night is over. Citylights is about how fast a city can strip a family down to nothing, and how far an honest man will go once it has.
What Happens To Deepak And Rakhi In Mumbai
Deepak gets a job as a security guard with a cash-transport company. Rakhi, who has never worked outside the home, ends up dancing in a bar to keep the family fed. Vishnu, a senior guard played by Manav Kaul, takes Deepak under his wing and slowly brings him into a plan to steal from the company’s own van. The last forty minutes are a heist film inside a social drama, and the ending is not the one Bollywood usually gives.
Why Citylights Matters In Rajkummar Rao’s Career
This came out a year after Shahid, and it is the film that showed Rajkummar Rao could carry a commercial release. Patralekhaa made her debut as Rakhi and the two of them have a quiet, married-couple ease that feels real. The film is an official remake of the British drama Metro Manila, moved from the Philippines to India, and the songs by Jeet Gannguli, especially Muskurane, became hits on their own.
