Scotty Smalls moves to the San Fernando Valley in the summer of 1962 with no friends, no idea how to throw and a stepfather who does not have time. Benny Rodriguez, the best player on the sandlot, picks him for the team anyway. The Sandlot is one summer, one field, nine boys and one dog, and it has become the baseball film for people who did not grow up with baseball.
What Happens With The Ball
Smalls hits his first home run with a ball he took from his stepfather’s trophy room. It is signed by Babe Ruth. It goes over the fence into the yard of the Beast, a dog that has eaten, according to Squints, 173 people. The last half of the film is a series of schemes to get it back: a pole, a vacuum cleaner, a catapult made from a treehouse. Then Babe Ruth visits Benny in a dream, Benny puts on his PF Flyers and jumps the fence. Also: the pool scene with Wendy Peffercorn, the chewing tobacco on the fairground ride, and “You’re killing me, Smalls.”
Why It Is A Family Tradition
It made modest money in 1993 and became huge on VHS and cable. James Earl Jones is Mr Mertle, the Beast’s owner. Patrick Renna as Ham gets every line that is on a T-shirt. The sandlot itself was built in Salt Lake City and the fans still visit.
