Louisa Clark has lost her job at the cafe in a small English town and needs money. The Traynors, who own the castle, hire her to keep their son Will company. Will was a banker and a climber until a motorbike hit him in the rain and left him quadriplegic. He does not want company. Me Before You was a bestseller before it was a film, and the film kept the ending that made the book a controversy.
What Happens In Six Months
Louisa finds out from Will’s mother that he has agreed to go to Dignitas in Switzerland in six months, and the family hope she can change his mind. She takes him to horse races, a concert, a wedding where they dance in the chair, and to Mauritius. She falls in love with him. He loves her back and does not change his mind. The last scene is in a Paris cafe, with a letter.
Why It Divided People
Disability groups protested the ending at the premiere and the argument has not gone away. Emilia Clarke, between Game of Thrones seasons, plays Louisa in bumblebee tights with more eyebrow movement than any actor of her generation. Sam Claflin lost weight to play Will and does the whole performance from the neck up. Jojo Moyes wrote the script from her own novel. Charles Dance and Janet McTeer are the parents. Matthew Lewis, Neville from Harry Potter, is the boyfriend who cares more about his triathlon.
