Ellison Oswalt had one bestseller ten years ago and has been chasing it since. He moves his family into a house in Pennsylvania without telling them that the previous family was hanged from the tree in the back garden and that the youngest daughter is missing. In the attic he finds a box of home movies. The first one is called Family Hanging Out ’11. Sinister was found by a 2020 study to be the scariest film ever measured by heart rate, and the Super 8 reels are why.
What Is On The Films
Pool Party ’66. BBQ ’79. Lawn Work ’86. Sleepy Time ’98. Each reel shows a family being killed in a different way, filmed by someone, with a figure in the background that gets clearer each time. A professor, played by Vincent D’Onofrio over Skype, identifies the symbol as belonging to Bughuul, a pagan deity who takes children. The missing children from each family are the ones who held the camera. Ellison’s daughter has started drawing.
Why It Still Works
Ethan Hawke plays a man who keeps watching because it will make a good book, and the film lets him be that selfish. The lawnmower reel is the jump scare people test friends with. Deputy So and So, played by James Ransone, is the only light in it. Christopher Young’s score is mostly distorted children’s voices. Scott Derrickson went on to Doctor Strange and The Black Phone.
