Deepak brings his new bride Phool home on a night train through central India in 2001. The carriage is full of newly married couples, all the brides veiled to the chin in the same red. He gets off at his station with the wrong one. Phool is left at a different station with no idea of her husband’s village name. The woman Deepak brought home, Pushpa, is lying about who she is. Laapataa Ladies was India’s entry for the Oscars and Kiran Rao’s first film as director since Dhobi Ghat.
What Happens To Phool And Pushpa
Phool is taken in by Manju Mai, a sharp-tongued woman who runs a tea stall at the station, played by Chhaya Kadam, and learns for the first time that a woman can earn her own money. Pushpa, in Deepak’s village, is kind to his family, learns organic farming, and is looking for an escape route to an agricultural college. Inspector Manohar, played by Ravi Kishan, takes bribes and is slowly embarrassed into doing his job. The two stories meet at the station.
Why It Was The Best-Reviewed Hindi Film Of Its Year
Aamir Khan produced it and stayed out of the way. The three young leads were unknowns. Chhaya Kadam’s Manju Mai has the film’s whole argument in one speech about why women are told they need men. It was adapted from a screenplay contest entry by Biplab Goswami. It went to Netflix after a small theatrical run and found its audience there.
