Comedy Family Music

Mitchie Torres wants to go to Camp Rock, the summer camp where record labels scout talent. Her family cannot afford it, so her mother takes the catering job and Mitchie goes for free, on condition she helps in the kitchen. She tells the popular girl Tess that her mother is a music executive in China. Camp Rock was the Disney Channel film that launched Demi Lovato and gave the Jonas Brothers their first lead roles.

What Happens At Camp

Shane Gray, lead singer of Connect 3, played by Joe Jonas, has been sent to camp as a punishment for his attitude. He hears a girl singing in the mess hall and spends the summer looking for her. It is Mitchie. Tess finds out about the kitchen and exposes her in front of the camp. Final Jam, the end-of-summer showcase, is where Mitchie sings This Is Me, Shane joins in, and he finds his girl. Alyson Stoner as Caitlyn is the friend who does not care about any of it.

Why It Mattered

It premiered in June 2008 to 8.9 million viewers, the second-highest Disney Channel premiere after High School Musical 2. This Is Me went top ten. The sequel, The Final Jam, followed in 2010. Demi Lovato was 15 and had done nothing but Barney and a short series before this. The Jonas Brothers were about to be the biggest band in America.
