Veronica Sawyer is the fourth member of the most powerful clique at Westerburg High, three girls all called Heather, and she hates it. Jason Dean, J.D., is new, wears a trench coat and fires blanks at the football players in the cafeteria. Veronica likes him. The next morning they go to Heather Chandler’s house to make her throw up, and J.D. hands her a mug of drain cleaner instead. Heathers was made as the anti-John Hughes film, and it is the teen comedy every dark teen comedy since has copied.
What Happens After Heather Chandler
Veronica forges a suicide note. The school decides Heather was deep and misunderstood. The two football players who spread a rumour about Veronica are next, with a note about a forbidden love and a bottle of mineral water. The school counsellor turns suicide into an assembly. Heather Duke takes over as the new Heather Chandler, in the red scrunchie. J.D.’s final plan is the whole school at a pep rally, with a bomb in the boiler room, and the ending is Veronica with a cigarette and a flag.
Why It Was Nearly Never Released
New World Pictures went bankrupt during the release. Daniel Waters’ script was written for Stanley Kubrick. Winona Ryder’s agent begged her not to do it. Christian Slater does Jack Nicholson for the whole film and admits it. “What’s your damage, Heather?” and the croquet opening are the beginning of a style. The musical came thirty years later.
