Drama Horror Sci-Fi

Day 89. The Abbott family walks barefoot through an abandoned town, signing to each other. The youngest boy finds a toy space shuttle and his sister gives it back to him. He puts the batteries in on the walk home. Day 472. Evelyn is pregnant. A Quiet Place has about ninety lines of spoken dialogue in ninety minutes, and it made 340 million dollars because audiences sat in silence for all of them.

What Happens On The Farm

Lee, the father, is building a hearing aid for his deaf daughter Regan and trying to find the creatures’ weakness. Regan blames herself for her brother. Marcus, the other son, is afraid of everything. The nail on the stairs. The grain silo. The birth in a bathtub with a creature in the house. The hearing aid, when it finally works, turns out to be the weapon, and the last shot is Evelyn with a shotgun and Regan with the aid turned up.

Why It Was A Surprise

John Krasinski was Jim from The Office and had directed two small films. Emily Blunt, his wife, took the part after reading the script and telling him not to cast anyone else. Millicent Simmonds is deaf and taught the cast sign language. The creatures were designed from the ears inward. A sequel in 2021 and a prequel in 2024 followed, and the third main film is set for 2027.
