Shizuku Tsukishima reads everything, and in every library book she borrows, the name Seiji Amasawa is on the card before hers. She wants to know who he is. On the train one day a fat cat sits next to her and gets off at her stop, and she follows it up a hill to an antique shop with a cat statue in a waistcoat called the Baron. Whisper of the Heart was the only film directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, who was supposed to take over Ghibli from Miyazaki and died at 47.
What Happens In The Antique Shop
Seiji is the shop owner’s grandson, he makes violins, and he is going to Cremona to train. Shizuku decides that if he can commit to a craft, she can too, and spends two months writing a story about the Baron while her grades collapse. Her parents, who are kind, let her. The old man reads the story and tells her the truth about it. Seiji comes back. The bicycle ride up the hill at dawn is the ending, and the proposal in it is more sincere than any adult one.
Why It Is The Ghibli Film About Growing Up
Miyazaki wrote the script and did the storyboards. The Baron got his own film, The Cat Returns. The Tokyo suburb of Tama is drawn exactly and people visit the shrine and the stairs. The song is Country Roads, sung in Japanese and in Shizuku’s own rewrite, Concrete Roads. The fantasy sequence of the Baron flying over the city was drawn by Miyazaki.
