Reed Strucker prosecutes mutants for a living. Then his daughter Lauren stops a car with a force field and his son Andy brings down a school gym in a panic attack. The Gifted starts with a family that has to become the thing the father spent his career hunting, and that is the whole engine of the show.
What Happens In The Series
Set in a version of the X-Men world where the X-Men themselves have disappeared, the Struckers go on the run from Sentinel Services and fall in with the Mutant Underground, a network run by Thunderbird, Blink, Eclipse and Polaris. Season one is mostly the family learning to trust people they used to fear. Season two splits the Underground against the Inner Circle, a better-funded mutant group with a harder answer to the question of how far you go to stay alive. The Frost sisters, three telepathic triplets who finish each other’s sentences, are the best addition of the second year.
Why The Gifted Is Worth Starting
It ran for two seasons on Fox, 29 episodes in total, and it is one of the few Marvel shows built around parents rather than teenagers. Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker play the Struckers, and Emma Dumont’s Polaris, the daughter of Magneto, carries the darkest storyline. The powers are shown without much CGI gloss, which has aged better than it sounds.
