Season one was Cosimo de’ Medici building the bank and the dome. Season two jumps forward to 1469 and his grandson Lorenzo, twenty years old, inheriting Florence from a dying father, with the Pazzi family across the piazza waiting for the Medici to make a mistake. Medici: The Magnificent is the season most people recommend, mostly because of Sean Bean as Jacopo de’ Pazzi, who spends eight episodes planning to kill the main character and nearly does it.
What Happens In Season Two
Lorenzo marries Clarice Orsini for her Roman connections, loses the Pope’s banking business to the Pazzi, fights a war over Volterra he did not want, and commissions Botticelli, who is a character here, to paint for the family. The season builds to the Pazzi Conspiracy of April 1478, when Lorenzo and his brother Giuliano were attacked during Mass in the Duomo. Giuliano died. Lorenzo did not. The last episode is the revenge.
Why Season Two Is Rated Above Season One
Daniel Sharman replaces Richard Madden as the lead and is better suited to Lorenzo’s charm. Bradley James, from Merlin, plays Giuliano, and the brothers’ relationship is the emotional centre. It was shot in Florence, Pienza and Montepulciano, in the real streets and churches. The series continued with a third season covering Lorenzo’s later years.
