Transformers are now illegal on Earth. Cade Yeager is hiding Autobots in a South Dakota junkyard. Optimus Prime has flown off to find his makers and finds Quintessa, who turns him against the planet. Meanwhile in England, Sir Edmund Burton, played by Anthony Hopkins, is the last of a secret order that has guarded the connection between Transformers and humans since Merlin. The Last Knight is Michael Bay’s fifth and final Transformers film, and it is the one that tries to tie Camelot, the Second World War and Stonehenge into the story at once.
What Happens Across The 154 Minutes
Cade is given a talisman that marks him as the last knight. Vivian Wembley, an Oxford professor played by Laura Haddock, is the last descendant of Merlin and the only person who can use his staff. The staff is on the ocean floor in a sunken Cybertronian ship. Megatron wants it, Quintessa wants it, and the finale is on Cybertron itself, which has arrived in Earth’s orbit, with the Autobots fighting on a planet surface that is falling apart under them. Bumblebee gets his voice back, briefly.
Why It Was The End Of The Bay Era
It was the first Transformers film to lose money relative to expectations, taking 605 million dollars against a 217 million dollar budget, and Bay stepped away afterwards. Bumblebee rebooted the series the following year. Hopkins has said he had a wonderful time and it shows.
