Gus, Richie and Clark are three men in their thirties who see a group of kids being thrown off a baseball diamond by a bigger team, step in, and end up playing the bullies themselves. Gus turns out to be very good. Richie is a video-store clerk who hits like a seven-year-old. Clark delivers newspapers and is afraid of the ball. The Benchwarmers is a Happy Madison comedy from the Adam Sandler production line, 80 minutes long, and exactly as dumb as it sets out to be.
What Happens In The Tournament
Jon Lovitz plays Mel, a billionaire who was bullied as a kid and now owns a replica of the Batmobile and a robot butler. He funds a tournament where the three men play every little league team in the state, and the winner gets a new stadium. The teams start cheating. Gus has a secret about his own childhood that comes out in the last act. Reggie Jackson shows up. So do a lot of cameos, and Nick Swardson is a burping, shirtless man with agoraphobia who lives in a closet.
Who It Is For
If you liked Grandma’s Boy and Benchwarmers came up next, this is the same crowd. Jon Heder made this straight off Napoleon Dynamite and plays Clark as a version of that character. Rob Schneider gets to be the straight man for once. The jokes are about farts, sunburn and a kid who eats sunscreen, and the film has no interest in being anything else.
