Cal Weaver’s wife Emily tells him at dinner that she slept with a colleague and wants a divorce. Cal says nothing and rolls out of the moving car. He starts going to a bar every night and telling strangers his story, until Jacob Palmer, who leaves that bar with a different woman every night, decides to fix him. Crazy, Stupid, Love. is three love stories that turn out to be one, and the scene where they collide in a back garden is the best farce scene in a 2010s comedy.
What Happens With The Three Couples
Jacob teaches Cal to dress, talk and stop drinking through a straw. Cal becomes good at it. Meanwhile Jacob meets Hannah, played by Emma Stone, the one woman the routine does not work on, and takes her home for the Dirty Dancing lift. Cal’s thirteen-year-old son Robbie is in love with his seventeen-year-old babysitter, who is in love with Cal. All of this comes together at the Weaver house in one afternoon, with Kevin Bacon arriving at the worst possible time.
Why It Is Better Than The Title
Steve Carell plays Cal with no comic armour at all. Ryan Gosling’s abs got a line about being photoshopped. Julianne Moore and Marisa Tomei both get real scenes. The graduation speech ending is the one weak spot, and it still lands.
