R is a zombie who lives in an airport, collects vinyl, and cannot remember his name beyond the first letter. On a feeding run into the city he kills a young man named Perry and eats his brain, which gives him Perry’s memories, which are mostly about Perry’s girlfriend Julie. R saves Julie from the other zombies and takes her back to the plane he lives in. Warm Bodies is Romeo and Juliet with zombies, and the names are not a coincidence.
What Happens After R Meets Julie
Julie, whose father runs the walled human city, gradually works out that R is not like the others. R’s heart starts beating. The change spreads to the other zombies, who begin to remember things. The Bonies, zombies who have given up entirely and are just skeletons, can sense the change and come for all of them. The balcony scene happens, literally. The ending is at the wall, with Julie’s father, played by John Malkovich, holding a gun on a zombie who is becoming a person.
Why It Works Better Than It Sounds
Nicholas Hoult’s inner monologue, a dead man narrating his own awkwardness, carries the whole first half. Rob Corddry as M, R’s best friend who communicates in grunts, gets most of the laughs. It was adapted from Isaac Marion’s novel and shot in Montreal in winter. The soundtrack is Springsteen, Guns N’ Roses and Bon Iver.
