Lara Jean Covey writes a letter to every boy she has ever had a crush on, seals it, addresses it and keeps it in a hatbox. Five letters. One of them is to Josh, her older sister’s boyfriend. One is to Peter Kavinsky, who she kissed once in seventh grade. Her little sister Kitty mails all of them. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the Netflix rom-com that brought the genre back in 2018, and the one that made Noah Centineo famous for a year.
What Happens With The Fake Relationship
Peter has just been dumped by Gen and wants to make her jealous. Lara Jean needs Josh to believe the letter meant nothing. So they agree to fake-date, with a contract: hand in back pocket, no kissing, she goes to his lacrosse games, he watches Sixteen Candles with her. The ski trip, the hot tub and the video that goes round school are where the fake stops being fake. The ending is on the lacrosse field with the contract.
Why It Worked
Jenny Han’s novel was adapted with the Korean-American family intact, which was rare. Lana Condor’s Lara Jean is shy without being a wallflower. Anna Cathcart as Kitty gets the best lines. John Corbett is the dad. The two sequels followed, and the spin-off series XO, Kitty came after. It is the comfort-watch film of its year.
