Christine Brown is a loan officer competing for assistant manager. An old Hungarian woman, Mrs Ganush, asks for a third extension on her mortgage, and Christine, wanting to look tough in front of her boss, says no. Mrs Ganush begs on her knees in the lobby. Christine has her removed. That evening in the car park Mrs Ganush takes a button from Christine’s coat and curses it. Drag Me to Hell is Sam Raimi going back to Evil Dead after three Spider-Man films, and it is the most fun he has had since.
What Happens In Three Days
The Lamia, a goat demon, will torment Christine for three days and then take her. Shadows move in her house. Her nose bleeds across a boardroom table. A fortune teller played by Dileep Rao explains the rules and a medium stages a seance with a goat. Mrs Ganush dies and Christine digs up her grave in the rain to give the button back. The ending at the train station is the best horror ending of its decade and everyone who has seen it knows why.
Why Raimi Fans Love It
It is PG-13 and still has a staple gun to the face, a mouthful of embalming fluid, an anvil, and a handkerchief fight. Alison Lohman replaced Ellen Page a week before shooting. Lorna Raver as Mrs Ganush, dentures out, is the villain of the decade. The Oldsmobile is Raimi’s own, as always.
