Lloyd Dobler has no career plan and says so at a dinner with Diane Court’s father: he does not want to sell anything, buy anything or process anything. Diane is the valedictorian who is going to England on a fellowship in September. Lloyd calls her the day after graduation and she says yes because she cannot think of a reason to say no. Say Anything… is Cameron Crowe’s first film as director and the boombox scene is the most referenced image in 1980s romance.
What Happens That Summer
Lloyd takes Diane to a party where he is the designated keymaster. He teaches her to drive. They sleep together in the back of his car and he shivers afterwards, which becomes the thing she tells her father. Her father, played by John Mahoney, runs a nursing home and the IRS is investigating him. Diane finds out he has been stealing from the residents. The film is really about her and her father, and Lloyd standing in the rain with In Your Eyes playing is the part people remember of a film that is about something else.
Why Lloyd Dobler Is Still A Type
John Cusack was 22 and said he would only do it if Lloyd could be a kickboxer. Lili Taylor as Corey, singing sixty-three songs about her ex, is the best supporting role. Joan Cusack is Lloyd’s sister. The ending on the plane, waiting for the seatbelt sign, is one of the great quiet endings.
