Diane Weston is captain of the Lincoln High A-Squad and in love with Jack, the quarterback, who is nice and not clever. She gets pregnant. Their parents throw them out, they move into a flat, and Jack’s job at a video store does not pay. Diane watches a heist film. Sugar & Spice is a cheerleader bank-robbery comedy with an 81-minute running time, and it is based loosely on a real case in Texas.
What Happens With The Robbery
The squad is Kansas, whose mother is in prison; Cleo, who is obsessed with Conan O’Brien; Lucy, who is going to Harvard; Hannah, who is religious; and Fern, the B-squad girl who wants in and is going to be a problem. They train by watching Point Break, Dog Day Afternoon and Reservoir Dogs, get guns through Kansas’s mother, and rob the bank inside a supermarket wearing Betty Doll masks. The story is told by Lisa, the B-squad captain, to the police, and she is lying about something.
Why It Has A Following
The film was recut after Columbine to be lighter and shorter, which is why it runs 81 minutes and why the robbery is bloodless. Marley Shelton and Marla Sokoloff carry it. James Marsden plays Jack as the dumbest kind person in any teen film. Mena Suvari, between American Beauty and American Pie 2, is Kansas. The Conan O’Brien obsession got a real O’Brien cameo on the radio.
