Tree Gelbman wakes up in a boy’s dorm room with a hangover on her birthday, which she hates because it was her mother’s too. She ignores her father’s calls, snaps at her roommate, sleeps with her professor, and on the way to a party is stabbed in a tunnel by someone in the Bayfield baby mask. She wakes up in the same dorm room. Happy Death Day is Groundhog Day as a slasher and it knows it, and Jessica Rothe dies about a dozen times in 96 minutes.
What Happens On The Loops
Tree is hanged, drowned, blown up, poisoned and hit by a bus, and each death leaves her a little weaker. Carter, the boy whose room she wakes up in, is the only person she tells. She makes a list of suspects: the roommate, the professor’s wife, the sorority president, a serial killer in the hospital. She uses a loop to walk naked across campus to Demons by Imagine Dragons. The killer’s identity comes with a cupcake and the last loop is the one where she gets the day right.
Why It Became A Series
Christopher Landon, who wrote Disturbia and Paranormal Activity sequels, directs it as a comedy first. Rothe, who had a small part in La La Land, carries all of it. The baby mask is the Bayfield University mascot. Blumhouse made it for 4.8 million dollars and took 125 million. Happy Death Day 2U, which turned it into science fiction, followed, and a third film has been promised for years.
