Jackie Moon had one hit, Love Me Sexy, in 1973 and used the money to buy the Flint Tropics of the American Basketball Association. He owns, coaches and plays for them, and they are the worst team in the league. In 1976 the ABA is merging with the NBA and taking the top four teams. The Tropics are ninth. Semi-Pro is the Will Ferrell sports film set in the ABA, and it is the one with the bear.
What Happens In The Season
Jackie trades the team’s washing machine for Monix, a former NBA bench player played by Woody Harrelson, who has a championship ring and a bad knee. Clarence “Coffee” Black, played by Andre Benjamin, is the team’s one talent and Monix teaches him to pass. Jackie’s promotions include wrestling a bear, which escapes into the crowd, jumping over cheerleaders on roller skates, and a corn-dog night. The last game against the San Antonio Spurs decides whether Flint stays alive, and Jackie wants to win it and also wants to be remembered.
Who Is In It
Will Arnett and Andrew Daly are the radio commentators and have the best lines in the film. Maura Tierney is Monix’s ex. Jackie Earle Haley is the stoner fan. Rob Corddry and David Koechner are in the league office. The afro, the headband and the shorts are all Ferrell’s own choice. It made 43 million dollars and lives on cable.
