Ricky Bobby’s father told him one thing before he left: if you ain’t first, you’re last. Ricky took it as his whole personality. He is the biggest driver in NASCAR, with his best friend Cal Naughton Jr. as his permanent second place, until Jean Girard, a gay French Formula One driver who reads Camus in the car, arrives and beats him. Talladega Nights is Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s second film after Anchorman, and some people think it is the better one.
What Happens After The Crash
Ricky crashes, is not hurt, believes he is paralysed and on fire, and runs round the track in his underwear. He loses his nerve, his wife to Cal, his house and his sponsorship. He delivers pizza. His father Reese, played by Gary Cole, comes back to train him with a cougar in the car. The final race at Talladega is Ricky against Girard with both cars wrecked, running to the finish line on foot, and a kiss. The dinner prayer to baby Jesus is the scene.
Why It Still Plays
Sacha Baron Cohen made this the same year as Borat. John C. Reilly’s Cal, “Shake and Bake”, is the best friend of the decade. The sons Walker and Texas Ranger are the rudest children in a studio film. Amy Adams, before Enchanted, is the assistant. Elvis Costello and Mos Def are at the dinner. The sponsorship jokes about Wonder Bread, Old Spice and Fig Newtons are all real brands that paid.
