Sam Montgomery’s father died in the Northridge earthquake and left everything, apparently, to her stepmother Fiona. Sam works at Fiona’s diner, sleeps in the attic, and her only escape is an anonymous text and email relationship with a boy who calls himself Nomad. Nomad is Austin Ames, the quarterback. A Cinderella Story was the biggest of the 2000s teen fairy-tale updates, and the one with Jennifer Coolidge as the stepmother.
What Happens At The Halloween Dance
Sam goes in a mask, dances with Austin, and runs at midnight because of her diner curfew, leaving a phone behind. Austin searches the school for the girl. Sam’s stepsisters find out first. The pep rally, where the stepsisters read Sam’s emails out to the whole school, is the low point, and the car wash owner, Austin’s father, is the obstacle on his side. Sam’s father’s will turns up where you would expect it to.
Why It Keeps Getting Rewatched
Hilary Duff was at the top of Lizzie McGuire fame and Chad Michael Murray was between Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill. Regina King as Rhonda, the diner manager who looks after Sam, is the heart of it. Coolidge’s “I’m not having a salmon day” lines got her a second career. The film spawned four direct-to-video sequels with no connection to this one.
