Maddy Whittier is eighteen and has never been outside. She has severe combined immunodeficiency, her mother is her doctor, and the house in Los Angeles is sealed with an airlock. Then a family moves in next door, and the son, Olly, starts writing his number on the window. Everything, Everything is a romance where the obstacle is the house itself, and the twist at the end changes what the whole film was about.
What Happens Between Maddy And Olly
They text. Maddy’s nurse Carla lets Olly in for a supervised visit, which Maddy’s mother would never allow. The texting conversations are staged as scenes inside the architectural models Maddy builds, with the two of them sitting in a diner or a library she has designed. Maddy decides she would rather live than be safe, gets a credit card, and flies to Hawaii with Olly. She gets sick. Then a doctor in Hawaii tells her something her mother never did.
Why It Found Its Audience
Nicola Yoon’s novel was a bestseller with the same readers who made The Fault in Our Stars a hit, and the film was released in the same May slot. Amandla Stenberg, four years after The Hunger Games, carries it. Nick Robinson was between Jurassic World and Love, Simon. Anika Noni Rose as the mother is the quiet centre, and the last scene between them is the one that stays.
