The Lamberts have just moved into a new house. Their son Dalton falls off a ladder in the attic and the next morning does not wake up. Doctors can find nothing wrong. The haunting starts: voices on the baby monitor, a boy dancing in the hallway, handprints on the sheets. Renai makes Josh move house. It happens again. Insidious is the film where James Wan found out he could scare an audience without blood, and the red-faced demon behind Josh’s head is the frame everyone remembers.
What Happens In The Further
Josh’s mother brings in Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye, a medium with two ghost hunters who argue about equipment. Elise explains that Dalton is not in a coma. He is an astral projector, he has travelled too far into a place she calls The Further, and things there want his body. Josh, it turns out, could do the same as a child and has had it hypnotised out of him. He has to go in after his son. The Tiptoe Through the Tulips scene, the gas-mask seance and the old woman in black are the set pieces.
Why It Made A Franchise
It cost 1.5 million dollars and made 100 million. Leigh Whannell, who wrote it, plays Specs. Lin Shaye, 66, became a horror lead and carried four sequels. The final shot, after you think it is over, is why there were sequels.
