Hallie Parker lives in Napa with her father, who makes wine. Annie James lives in London with her mother, who designs wedding dresses. They have never met. At Camp Walden in Maine they are put in the same cabin, hate each other, get punished together in the isolation cabin, and work out that they have the same birthday and the same face. The Parent Trap was Lindsay Lohan’s first film, at eleven, playing both twins, and it is Nancy Meyers’ first film as director.
What Happens After The Swap
Hallie goes to London as Annie. Annie goes to Napa as Hallie. Each meets the parent she has never known. The problem is Meredith Blake, a 26-year-old publicist who is about to marry the father for his vineyard, and the twins’ campaign against her is the middle of the film: a camping trip, a lizard, a backpack in the lake. The parents are brought together in San Francisco, at a hotel, with a bottle of wine that Nick kept from the wedding.
Why It Holds Up
Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid play the parents with real warmth, and Richardson’s death in 2009 gave the film a second life for people who grew up with it. Elaine Hendrix’s Meredith is a perfect villain. The handshake, the Oreos with peanut butter, and the ear piercing with an apple are the scenes. Lohan’s English accent is better than most adults manage.
