Princess Lili loves Jack, a boy who lives in the forest, and he shows her the unicorns. She touches one, which is forbidden, and the goblins who have been waiting for exactly that chance shoot it and take its horn. The sun goes out. Winter falls in a second. Legend is the Ridley Scott film between Blade Runner and Someone to Watch Over Me, and Tim Curry’s Darkness is one of the great practical-makeup creations.
What Happens In The Dark
Jack gathers Gump the elf, two dwarves and a fairy named Oona and goes into the Lord of Darkness’s lair to get the horn back and save the second unicorn. Lili is captured and Darkness tries to seduce her with a black dress and a dance with a figure in a mirror. The final confrontation uses sunlight bounced through the castle on shields. Darkness, with his red skin and horns the width of a doorway, took five hours of makeup a day.
Why There Are Two Versions
The American cut, 89 minutes with a Tangerine Dream synth score, is the one most people saw. The director’s cut, 113 minutes with Jerry Goldsmith’s original orchestral score, was restored in 2002 and is the better film. The forest was built on the 007 stage at Pinewood and burned down during the shoot. Tom Cruise made this straight before Top Gun.
