Peg Boggs is selling Avon door to door and has run out of doors, so she drives up to the dark castle above the suburb. Inside is Edward, a boy built by an inventor who died before he could give him hands. He has blades instead. Peg takes him home. Edward Scissorhands is the film Tim Burton made about growing up in Burbank, and it is the first time he worked with Johnny Depp.
What Happens In The Suburb
The neighbours love him at first. He cuts hedges into dinosaurs, cuts dogs’ hair, cuts the women’s hair, and a woman named Joyce tries to seduce him in the back of her salon. Kim, Peg’s daughter, played by Winona Ryder, comes home from camping and screams. Her boyfriend Jim uses Edward to break into his own father’s house, and from there the town turns. The ice-sculpture scene, with Kim dancing in the shavings, is the image the film is remembered for.
Why It Is Burton’s Most Personal Film
The suburb was a real housing estate in Florida painted in pastels. Vincent Price, in his last role, is the Inventor. Danny Elfman’s score, the choir over the snow, is the one people play at Christmas. Depp has said it is the role he is proudest of. The ending, with the old woman telling the story and the snow falling, is told from Kim’s point of view decades later.
