Daniel Hillard is a voice actor who quits a job on principle, throws his son a birthday party with a petting zoo while his wife is at work, and gets divorced. The court gives him Saturdays. Miranda advertises for a housekeeper. Daniel, with the help of his brother who does makeup for films, becomes Euphegenia Doubtfire, a sixty-year-old Scottish widow. Mrs. Doubtfire was the second-biggest film of 1993 after Jurassic Park, and it is the Robin Williams performance most people picture first.
What Happens With The Nanny
Mrs Doubtfire cooks, which she cannot, so she orders in. She cleans, she helps with homework, she disciplines, and she is a better parent than Daniel ever was. Miranda starts dating Stuart, played by Pierce Brosnan, and Mrs Doubtfire throws a lime at his head. The children find out one by one. The restaurant scene, where Daniel has to be both Mrs Doubtfire at one table and himself at another, with changes in the toilets, is the set piece. The custody hearing afterwards does not go the way a comedy usually goes.
Why It Is More Than A Drag Comedy
Sally Field’s Miranda is never the villain, and the ending refuses to put the marriage back together. Williams improvised so much that there are four versions of some scenes. The makeup took four hours and won the Oscar. The house on Steiner Street in San Francisco is still visited.
