Clark Griswold is not going anywhere this year. He is going to have Christmas at home, with a tree he cut down himself, 25,000 imported Italian twinkle lights on the house, and a swimming pool paid for by the bonus he is expecting. Both sets of grandparents arrive. Then Cousin Eddie’s RV pulls up. Christmas Vacation is the third Vacation film and the one that gets watched every year, and John Hughes wrote it from his own short story.
What Happens Over The Holiday
The lights do not work, until Ellen flips a switch in the garage and they drain the city grid. The tree is too big for the room, and the replacement has a squirrel in it. Eddie empties his chemical toilet into the storm drain. The cat chews the Christmas lights. Aunt Bethany wraps her cat as a gift and says grace with the Pledge of Allegiance. The turkey is dry. The bonus arrives and it is a subscription to the Jelly of the Month Club, and Clark’s speech about what he would like to say to his boss is the one people have memorised.
Why It Is The Best Of The Series
Chevy Chase’s Clark is a man trying so hard that the trying is the comedy. Randy Quaid’s Eddie, in the white dickie and the bathrobe, is a national figure. Johnny Galecki and Juliette Lewis are the kids this time. The saucer-sled scene, with the kitchen lubricant, is the stunt. Mavis Staples sings the theme.
