Torrance Shipman has just been made captain of the Toros, the five-time national champion cheer squad from Rancho Carne High in San Diego. The new girl, Missy, a gymnast who thinks cheerleading is stupid, recognises the routine. It belongs to the East Compton Clovers, who have been filmed and copied for years and have never been able to afford nationals. Bring It On is a comedy about cultural theft dressed as a cheerleading film, and it has five sequels that are not about anything.
What Happens Before Nationals
Torrance decides the Toros will compete with an original routine and hires a choreographer who sells the same routine to six squads. The Clovers, led by Isis, played by Gabrielle Union, raise the money to get to Florida. Missy’s brother Cliff, played by Jesse Bradford, likes Torrance and makes her a mixtape. The national final is Toros against Clovers with routines the squads performed themselves, and the ending gives the trophy to the right team.
Why It Became A Cult Film
The spirit fingers. The opening dream cheer. The toothbrush scene. Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku made it between Virgin Suicides and Buffy. Peyton Reed went on to Ant-Man. Gabrielle Union has said the film’s biggest problem is that the Clovers should have been the leads, and the sequels never fixed it.
