Sophie makes hats in her late father’s shop and has decided she is plain. A wizard rescues her from two soldiers in the street and walks her through the air. That night the Witch of the Waste comes to the shop, jealous, and turns Sophie into a ninety-year-old woman who cannot tell anyone what happened. Sophie walks into the wastes and flags down the castle. Howl’s Moving Castle was nominated for the Animated Feature Oscar and is many people’s favourite Miyazaki.
What Happens In The Castle
Calcifer, a fire demon, powers the castle and is bound to Howl by a contract. Markl is the apprentice. The front door opens on four different places depending on the dial. Howl is vain, dramatic and turns into a bird to fight in a war he wants no part of, and each time he changes back a little less. Sophie cleans, cooks, and gets younger whenever she stops thinking about herself. The war, the king’s sorceress Madame Suliman, and the scarecrow Turnip Head all come together in the last act.
Why It Is Loved
Miyazaki made it as a reaction to the Iraq war and the anti-war streak is not hidden. The castle itself, a heap of houses and chimneys on bird legs, is one of the great animated designs. Joe Hisaishi’s Merry-Go-Round of Life is the theme. The English dub has Christian Bale as Howl, Emily Mortimer and Jean Simmons as Sophie, and Billy Crystal as Calcifer. Diana Wynne Jones wrote the book.
