Stanley Ipkiss is a bank clerk in Edge City who gets walked over by everybody. On the worst night of his life he fishes a wooden mask out of the river, puts it on at home, and his head spins round and turns green. The Mask does whatever Stanley has been too polite to do. The Mask was released five months after Ace Ventura and made Jim Carrey the biggest comedy star in the world in a single year.
What Happens In Edge City
The Mask robs the bank Stanley works at, which is awkward because gangster Dorian Tyrell was about to rob it himself. He dances the Cuban Pete number with an entire police squad. He takes Tina Carlyle, the lounge singer who was casing the bank, out dancing at the Coco Bongo. Dorian gets hold of the mask and the ending is in the club with a bomb, a dog named Milo who also wears the mask, and Stanley deciding he does not need it.
Why It Still Looks Good
Industrial Light and Magic built the effects on Carrey’s own face, which was already elastic enough that the cartoon stuff reads as an extension of him. Cameron Diaz was 21 and had never acted. The yellow zoot suit, “Smokin'” and “Somebody stop me” are all here. The Norse god Loki explanation was mostly cut and the film is better for it.
