Nancy Drew solves crimes in River Heights with a magnifying glass and a penny loafer. Her father, a lawyer, moves them to Los Angeles for a case and makes her promise no sleuthing. The house he rents belonged to Dehlia Draycott, a film star who died in 1981 in circumstances nobody ever explained. Nancy lasts about a day. Nancy Drew is the only big-screen version of the character until the 2019 reboot, and it is a comedy about a 1950s girl in a 2007 school.
What Happens In Hollywood
Nancy finds a secret room in the house, a hidden will and a daughter Dehlia gave up. The mean girls at school make fun of her clothes until her clothes become the trend. Corky, a twelve-year-old who follows her around, becomes her partner. Ned, her boyfriend from home, flies out. The man who wants the will found has a bomb, a car chase and a reason. Bruce Willis has a cameo as himself, being told how to do his own stunt.
Why It Is Worth A Look
Emma Roberts plays Nancy as a girl who is never embarrassed and never wrong, which is the character. Rachael Leigh Cook is the daughter. Tate Donovan is Carson Drew. Andrew Fleming, who made Dick and The Craft, keeps it light and a bit odd. It was shot in the old Hollywood houses and the house itself is a character.
