Lizzie McGuire has graduated from middle school by falling off the stage into the curtains. The class trip is two weeks in Rome, chaperoned by Miss Ungermeyer, who has rules. At the Trevi Fountain, Paolo, half of the Italian pop duo Paolo and Isabella, stops Lizzie because she looks exactly like Isabella, who has vanished before the International Music Video Awards. The Lizzie McGuire Movie was the end of the series and the start of Hilary Duff’s film career, and it opened at number two behind X2.
What Happens In Rome
Lizzie sneaks out of the hotel every day on the back of Paolo’s Vespa, rehearses as Isabella, and lets Gordo cover for her. Gordo gets caught and sent home, which is when Lizzie, and the audience, understands what he is. Isabella turns up and tells Lizzie what Paolo is actually doing. The awards show is Lizzie singing What Dreams Are Made Of in a silver dress, live on television, and her parents and brother Matt in the audience having flown in. The Gordo kiss on the roof is the end.
Why It Mattered To A Generation
Animated Lizzie is still there, commenting. Hilary Duff played both Lizzie and Isabella. Yani Gellman is Paolo. Alex Borstein is Miss Ungermeyer. The Rome locations are real: the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, Trevi. A sequel series was shot in 2019 and cancelled after two episodes, which fans still argue about.
