Larry Daley has had a lot of jobs and his son is starting to notice. He takes the night shift at the American Museum of Natural History, where three elderly guards are being retired. They hand him a manual and a torch and tell him not to let anything out. At sunset the T-rex skeleton gets up. Night at the Museum was the biggest Christmas film of 2006 and Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt is the reason it has a heart.
What Happens After Dark
An Egyptian tablet brings every exhibit to life each night. Teddy Roosevelt on his horse is the guide. Attila the Hun wants to tear Larry apart. Dexter the capuchin steals his keys. Jedediah the cowboy, played by Owen Wilson, and Octavius the Roman, played by Steve Coogan, are two inches tall and at war across a diorama. The Easter Island head wants gum-gum. The old guards, led by Dick Van Dyke, turn out to be stealing the tablet, and the finale is Larry, his son, and every exhibit in a chase through Central Park.
Why It Became Three Films
Ben Stiller plays Larry as a man whose jokes do not land, which is the right choice. Ricky Gervais is the museum director. The real museum saw a 20 percent rise in visitors. Two sequels followed, the last one being among Williams’ final films. Shawn Levy went on to Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine.
