Ignacio was raised in a monastery in Oaxaca and now cooks for the orphans there, badly, with no budget. He has loved lucha libre since he was a boy. A new nun, Sister Encarnacion, arrives, and the orphans’ food is scraps. He makes a mask and some stretchy pants and enters a tag-team match with a street thief named Esqueleto. Nacho Libre is loosely based on Fray Tormenta, a real Mexican priest who wrestled for 23 years to fund his orphanage.
What Happens In The Ring
Nacho and Esqueleto lose every match and get paid anyway, which is how lucha works. Nacho buys the orphans salad. He goes to a party for Ramses, the champion, and is humiliated. He eats an eagle egg for its powers. He fights a pair of small men in a tag match. He is found out by the monastery and leaves. The final match, against Ramses, for the orphans, with the flying move he has been practising, is the ending.
Why It Is The Jared Hess Film People Quote
“Get that corn out of my face.” “I’m a little concerned right now about your salvation.” Jack Black sings the songs himself, including one about Encarnacion that he improvised. Hector Jimenez’s Esqueleto, who believes in science, is the second-best thing in it. Mike White, who wrote School of Rock, co-wrote. Shot in Oaxaca with real luchadores. Ana de la Reguera is Encarnacion.
