Columbus has survived the zombie apocalypse by being a coward with rules: cardio, double tap, beware of bathrooms, seatbelts. He meets Tallahassee, who kills zombies for fun and is looking for the last Twinkie in America. They are robbed by Wichita and Little Rock, two sisters heading for an amusement park in Los Angeles where there are supposedly no zombies. Zombieland is 88 minutes, has a Bill Murray cameo that is the best cameo in any comedy, and made Emma Stone a star.
What Happens On The Road
They end up in the same car. Columbus falls for Wichita. They reach Beverly Hills and break into a mansion that belongs to Bill Murray, who is alive and dressed as a zombie to blend in, and who gets shot by Columbus during a Ghostbusters game. Tallahassee tells the story of his son. The sisters leave in the night for Pacific Playland, which is full of zombies, and the finale is the two men driving to save them with a ride on the drop tower.
Why It Holds Up
The opening credits in slow motion to Metallica are still copied. The rules appear on screen and interact with the scenery. Woody Harrelson’s Tallahassee, nut up or shut up, is his best comic role. Jesse Eisenberg made this a year before The Social Network. The sequel took ten years and brought everyone back.
