Henry Roth is a marine vet in Oahu who dates tourists because they leave. At a diner he meets Lucy Whitmore, who builds houses out of waffles, and they have a great breakfast. The next morning she has no idea who he is. A car accident a year earlier left her unable to form new memories, and her father and brother have been recreating the same Sunday for her ever since. 50 First Dates is the Sandler and Barrymore film that works as a romance first and a comedy second.
What Happens Every Morning
Henry makes a video tape explaining the accident and her life, so she can watch it each morning and catch up. He meets her again every day at the diner. Her father, played by Blake Clark, and her steroid-using brother Doug, played by Sean Astin, resist and then help. Ula, played by Rob Schneider, gets beaten up on a regular basis. Lucy, who paints Henry without knowing why, decides she is holding him back and erases him from her journal. The ending on the boat is the one.
Why It Is The Best Sandler Romance
Barrymore said it was the film she most wanted to make with him after The Wedding Singer. The Beach Boys’ Wouldn’t It Be Nice, covered in reggae, opens it. The walrus Jocko and the penguin Willy are real. Dan Aykroyd is the doctor. It was shot on Oahu’s North Shore and it looks like a holiday.
