Lucy Emerson, newly divorced, moves her sons Michael and Sam to her father’s house in Santa Carla, California, a beach town whose welcome sign has “Murder Capital of the World” sprayed on the back. Michael follows a girl named Star to a cave under the pier where David and his gang hang out. He drinks from a bottle. It is not wine. The Lost Boys is the film that made vampires young, and the one Buffy, Twilight and everything since are answering.
What Happens In Santa Carla
Michael starts sleeping all day and floating outside his window. Sam, who reads comics, meets the Frog brothers at the comic store, two kids who claim to be vampire hunters and are right. They work out that killing the head vampire will turn Michael back. The problem is that nobody knows who the head vampire is. The last twenty minutes are a siege on the grandfather’s house with holy water in squirt guns, a bath full of garlic, and a stereo. The last line belongs to the grandfather.
Why It Still Plays
Joel Schumacher shot the boardwalk at Santa Cruz as a neon fairground. Kiefer Sutherland’s David, bleach-blond in a black coat, became the look of the vampire for a generation. The two Coreys met here. The saxophone man on the beach is Tim Cappello and he is still asked about it. Echo and the Bunnymen’s cover of People Are Strange opens it.
