Nicholas Angel has the highest arrest rate in the Metropolitan Police and is making everyone else look bad, so he is promoted to sergeant and sent to Sandford, the safest village in Britain. His partner is Danny Butterman, the chief’s son, who has seen every action film and asks whether Angel has ever fired two guns while jumping through the air. Hot Fuzz is the second film in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto trilogy, and it is the best British comedy of its decade.
What Happens In Sandford
An actor and his girlfriend are decapitated in a car. A property developer’s house explodes. A journalist is killed by a falling church spire. The village calls them accidents. Angel suspects Simon Skinner, the supermarket manager played by Timothy Dalton, and is wrong about why. The Neighbourhood Watch Alliance, with its hoods and its village-of-the-year obsession, is the answer, and the last half hour is Angel riding into the square on a white horse with every weapon in the evidence room.
Why It Rewards Rewatching
Every line in the first half pays off in the second. The swan. The model village. The Andys. The cast includes Bill Nighy, Martin Freeman, Steve Coogan, Cate Blanchett behind a mask and Peter Jackson as Father Christmas. Wright watched 138 action films to prepare. The shootout in the supermarket is Point Break and Bad Boys II at once, which Danny makes Angel watch.
