Ashitaka kills a boar god that has become a demon, a mass of writhing worms, and the touch leaves a curse on his arm that will spread and kill him. He is exiled from his village and rides west to find what the boar was so angry about. He finds Irontown, run by Lady Eboshi, who is cutting down the forest to mine iron, and San, a girl raised by wolves who has sworn to kill her. Princess Mononoke was the highest-grossing film in Japanese history until Titanic, and it is Miyazaki’s angriest.
What Happens In The Forest
Eboshi makes guns and employs lepers and former prostitutes, and the film refuses to make her a villain. San attacks Irontown and Ashitaka carries her out, taking a bullet. The Forest Spirit, a deer with a man’s face by day and a walking night-walker by dark, heals him. The boars go to war. Eboshi’s deal with the emperor’s hunter is to shoot the Forest Spirit’s head off. The last act is the headless spirit spreading death across the valley, and the two of them returning its head.
Why It Is The One Adults Pick
Nobody wins. Miyazaki has said he did not want a good-versus-evil story, and the film ends with a truce rather than a victory. The animation of the demon worms and the night-walker was hand-drawn over three years. Neil Gaiman wrote the English dub, which has Claire Danes, Gillian Anderson and Minnie Driver. “Cut off a wolf’s head and it still has the power to bite.”
